FRANKFORT, KY (WAVE) - Saying they seek to take the program to new heights, Kentucky State University has fired John L. Smith as head football coach.
“I want to thank Coach Smith for bringing his time, talents and his dedication to the Hill and the football student-athletes at Kentucky State University and for his sincere commitment to higher education and ‘Life in the Balance,’” Kentucky State University Director of Athletics Etienne M. Thomas said in a news release announcing his firing. “I have enjoyed the brief time we have served together at Kentucky State and pray for all God’s blessings for he and his family in this next chapter.”
Smith, who was hired in 2016, had a 9-25 record in his three seasons leading the Thorobreds. In his first season, Smith's team won the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference West Division title, but lost in overtime to Fort Valley State in the SIAC championship game.
Thomas said defensive coordinator Kevin Weston will be the interim head coach.
