How to avoid porch package thefts

Ways to prevent packages from being stolen

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - In the midst of the busy holiday shopping season, more and more people post videos of packages being stolen right off their front porch.

It’s a problem we see every year, but UPS spokesman Jim Mayer said he doesn’t believe it’s because it’s happening more.

“What I think we see more is the video doorbells,” Mayer said. “And the few cases where it does happen, that becomes viral and people see that a lot. But it really doesn’t happen very often."

UPS estimates they will deliver 800 million packages globally between Black Friday and Christmas Eve.

They encourage shoppers to shop early to ensure shipments arrive on time.

Mayer said there are options for people worried about someone stealing a package from their home. He said you don’t have to ship the item to your house. He suggests shipping it to your workplace or to a family member or friend who will be home when it’s delivered.

“If that’s not an option, UPS provides several other ways to receive your package, allowing you to choose how and when you receive your package,” Mayer said.

Mayer suggests signing up for UPS My Choice, which allows you to track your package and reroute it if you need to.

“You’ll get an alert the day before [the package is delivered] and you can actually reroute that package to this locker, to another UPS store or to another access point -- no charge, and pick up your package there,” Mayer said.

There are a few UPS Access Point locker locations across WAVE Country.

In order to get your package from a locker, you must scan your tracking number then show your ID to verify who you are.

“This is really a great option,” Mayer said. "You have that certainty that the package is inside the locker there waiting for you.”
