JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (WAVE) - A community of friends rallied around a Clark County family that has had a challenging year.
In November, Chad Whobrey was stringing Christmas lights on his Charlestown house when his ladder collapsed, sending him crashing 15 feet onto concrete.
His wife, Kara, a nurse, said he suffered broken vertebrae, broken ribs and broken bones in his face.
Earlier in the year, Kara Whobrey suffered two heart attacks.
Longtime friends of Chad organized a fundraiser for the family Tuesday night.
A large crowd attended to contribute and bid on donated items.
“We are so beyond blessed to have this amazing group of people around us,” Kara Whobrey said.
A GoFundMe page for the family was more than half way to its goal of $15,000 when the fundraiser began.
Chad Whobrey could not attend as he continues to recover. He has undergone surgery to repair damage to his spine and his face.
His wife recently posted an update to his condition on their GoFundMe page.
“Car rides are pure hell for him so we have to heavily medicate him beforehand,” Kara said in the post. “We went to the doctor and the pharmacy today and it completely wore him out so he’s been sleeping since we got home. The road to recovery is long, but seeing daily improvements is a positive thing! Thank you to everyone for your continued love and support!”
The fundraiser gave the Whobreys some very fond memories for this Christmas after some very difficult days.
“I’m blown away by all the people that came out and all the local businesses that donated,” Kara said with a big smile. “Just an outpouring of love and support. I’m truly honored.”
