JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (WAVE) - Officials broke ground for the new Chapel Lake Park in Clark County on Thursday.
The park will be 115 acres off New Chapel Road, backing up to River Ridge. It’s the city’s first park east of I-265.
When it’s finished, Chapel Lake Park will have a playground and picnic area. Plans also include a lake for fishing, kayaking and canoeing.
And at 115 acres, there will be plenty of space for people to walk, hike and bike the trails.
“We’ve got parks that have football fields, we’ve got parks that have soccer fields, we’ve got parks that have basketball courts,” Mayor Mike Moore said. “What we don’t have is a large green space where people can just come out, unwind, take a nice walk through basically the wilderness.”
This week, the River Ridge Board of Directors voted to donate 105 acres to the park.
The city is hoping River Ridge employees will visit Chapel Lake on their lunch breaks.
Construction is expected to be finished in the spring of 2020.
