Food Angels, other programs help hungry through holidays

Salvation Army, United Way, others team up to help the hungry during the holidays

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Kroger and the Salvation Army are teaming up to make the holidays more fulfilling for some families.

Quite literally, they're helping those in need eat well heading into Christmas with Food Angels.

You can find them hanging on a tree in Kroger stores in the Louisville area.

At the cost of $25, you can buy an Angel off the tree and the proceeds will feed a specific family over the holiday.

It's simple- pick one up as you shop and bring it through to check out.

A lot of people were in the giving spirit today around Friday.

Metro United Way along with others helped pack up Boxes of Love on Fourth Street.

Representatives of the group said they'll be able to feed 1,450 families this year thanks to $35,000 worth of donations.

If you want to help out over the holidays, those at Metro United Way said Americana may still be looking for help. They hold a big volunteer driven holiday event Friday night.

Those at the Salvation Army told us Friday is the last day to sign up for bell ringing leading up to Christmas, but you can always help out by dropping off donations.

"The last couple of days before Christmas, everybody is so happy,” Major Roy Williams, a Salvation Army leader, said. “They come out of the store, they've finished their shopping. So, I say okay, then bless somebody else."

Folks at the St. John Center for Homeless Men said they don’t need volunteers, but are always in need of donations of coffee and personal hygiene items.
