State extends key deadline for JCPS to find special education chief
The state gave the district more time to find a qualified candidate to fill the position of Chief for Exceptional Child Education Services.

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The Kentucky Department of Education has extended a key deadline for the Jefferson County Public School district to avoid a state takeover.

JCPS was supposed to hire a Chief for Exceptional Child Education Services by Jan. 1, 2019, as part of the agreement with the state.

A lack of qualified candidates has forced the state to extend the deadline.

The person hired must have a decade of experience in special education.

State officials proposed a new deadline of March 1 to fill the position.

The JCPS board will vote on the new timeline at a meeting Jan. 8.
