LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - For the first time in school history, the University of Louisville women will play in a #1 verses #2 game on Thursday night at seven o’clock when they travel to Notre Dame. The second ranked Cards come into the game at 14-0 while #1 Notre Dame is 14-1. The Irish’s only loss came to UCONN who fell to #3 in this week’s poll after losing at then #8 Baylor.
U of L and Notre Dame met twice last season with the Cards winning both match ups. The last time these two met in the regular season, U of L put a 100-67 beat down on the Irish in the KFC Yum! Center. The two teams met again in March with the the ACC Tournament title on the line with the Cards completing the season sweep of the Irish with a 74-72 win. U of L head coach, Jeff Walz says last year’s results have nothing to do with Thursday nights game. “Most coaches, you might talk about it briefly, last year is last year. It’s nothing that we’ve talked about. We’re a different team, they’re a different team. You know, you go back and look at film and say hey, what did we do that worked for us?”, said Walz in Wednesday’s press conference.
U of L has only beaten a #1 ranked team once in school history. That win came against Baylor in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. In their other 10 match ups with the #1 team in the country, the Cards 0-10, all against UCONN. Senior point guard, Arica Carter says while this is a big game, the team is keeping things in perspective. “I think it’s not as much pressure on us, because it’s still early in the season. We know they’re a great team and we’re a great team, and it’s going to be a battle, but it’s not as much pressure yet,” said Carter.
