LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - What began as a death investigation is being considered murder after police found a man dead in Cherokee Triangle.
Police responded to a call around 2:30 a.m. of a person down in an upstairs apartment in the 1000 block of Everett Ave. Inside, officers found a man in his early 40s, dead.
On Sunday, the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Brian Price, age 41.
The cause of death was a gunshot wound.
Police will not know how long the body had been there until the autopsy comes back.
LMPD Initially considered the shooting a death investigation, until hours later, when homicide detectives switched gears.
“Upon further investigation there was evidence homicide detectives decided that it appeared to be a homicide and not self inflicted,” LMPD spokesman Dwight Mitchell said.
Neighbors were wary of going on camera, clearly disturbed that such violence occurred in their quiet neighborhood. But several people said the victim was believed to be a drug dealer around the Avenue in the Highlands complex.
“Cherokee Triangle has always been a safe area,” Highlands resident Chris Petot said.
Petot has been living in the area for three years and said the only other shooting he could recall happened a year ago when a man was killed during a robbery just one block down the street.
“That was just a random act, and I’m assuming this is too, because this doesn’t usually happen around here,” Petot said.
There are no suspects at this time. Anyone with information should call police at (502) 574-LMPD.
