EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - An Evansville man is arrested for allegedly attacking a store clerk with a machete.

Officers said 45-year-old Myron Matthews tried to rob the Kangaroo Express on Kentucky Avenue around 4:00 Thursday morning.

The man came around the counter and began attacking the clerk with a machete knife.

The clerk fought back, using a stool.

The two continued to fight, knocking down items inside the store, before eventually falling to the ground.

Police said the clerk was able to wrestle the machete away from Matthews, who then ran away without getting any money.

Corporal Steve Green of the Evansville Police Dept said, "The guy was caught a short time later, a couple blocks away by officers."

A case report said the suspect, Myron L. Matthews, admitted being in the store with a machete knife.

Green said the suspect told officers he just "snapped."

"It's real unusual, but the suspect admitted to smoking crack cocaine earlier that day," said Green.

Matthews faces charges of aggrevated battery with a machete and attempted robbery with a weapon.

Green said, "This guy probably smokes a lot of crack and probably just going to get a little more cash, to buy more product."

The clerk was treated for a cut to his hand.
