LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Just hours after a robbery at Circle K at 2703 Preston Highway, police say they found their man. Investigators linked Troy Wayne Cox to the crime but they say, this isn't the only one.
"Mr. Cox has been charged with nine local business robberies, seven of which occurred in Metro Police jurisdiction," said Lieutenant James Mueller, commander of the Louisville Metro Police Robbery Unit.
Police say the mostly convenient store crimes stretched from July 9 to September 2. Some robberies occurred on the same day and the targets included at least four different Circle K stores.
"The robberies occurred usually in the evening hours," said Mueller. "He would enter the business and either inquire about a product or bring a product to the cash register as if he was going to purchase it, at which point he would produce a hand gun and demand money."
It was a routine that came to a standstill after suspicious activity put an officer on alert Thursday morning. The officer found burglary tools and a gun after he stopped Cox in the 4800 block of Hummingbird Lane. That's when Louisville Metro Police and Audobon Park police got involved.
"A Lynnview Police Officer was on patrol and he was aware of the robbery earlier down the street from his jurisdiction," Mueller said, referring to the Circle K robbery on Preston Highway. "He observed a subject acting suspiciously in and around some homes and made contact with that individual."
The move later landed Cox behind bars, but police say the investigation isn't over yet.
"Did our investigation, conducted some searches, some interviews, recovered a vehicle and some other evidence," said Mueller. "Mr. Cox is a serial robber, we don't know that he acted alone, there is the possibility that there are other suspects related to these robberies or there are other robberies he hasn't been charged with."
While Mueller said no store workers were harmed in any of the LMPD cases, we did some research and learned Cox is also linked to cases in Jeffersontown and St. Matthews.
Each robbery is considered a Class B Felony in Kentucky. One count alone carries a 10 to 20 year prison sentence.
