FRANKFORT, KY (AP) - A deputy coroner says a 15-year-old who collapsed while trying out for a high school basketball team in Frankfort died from a cardiac arrest.
Franklin County Deputy Coroner Kelly T. Adams says preliminary autopsy results show Waseeq Shahid had "several abnormalities to the heart" that led to the cardiac arrest. Shahid was a freshman at Western Hills High School.
Franklin County Public Schools spokeswoman Wayne Dominick says Shahid was about 6 minutes into his first practice at Western Hills High School when he collapsed Monday afternoon. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
Dominick says Shahid had cleared a standard physical examination last week.
The boy's funeral was set for Tuesday afternoon in Elizabethtown.
