STANTON, KY (WAVE) - A different type of hero received a special honor Monday in eastern Kentucky. For many weeks, we have told about the mission of Jim Davis from Bullitt County to collect 100,000 books for the poorer areas of eastern Kentucky. Davis' goal, to help so many others while he suffers from a terminal illness, has gained attention across the country.

Struggling to walk, Davis made a grand entrance at the Powell County Public Library in Stanton. Because of him, the library is one of many places in eastern Kentucky where kids will have many more books to choose from.

Jane Beshear, Kentucky’s First Lady, was on hand to read a special proclamation from her husband, the governor, to honor Davis.

Ever since our story first aired on his book-raising mission, WAVE 3 viewers have stepped up. Davis has received box after box of books and is rapidly approaching the 100,000 mark. A huge delivery just came from the west coast.

“I had 10,000 books the other day from California out of the blue. Didn't call nobody, write or talk. Just came to my house on a tractor trailer," said Davis.

Davis' effort got the attention of the big boys too – Microsoft, Barnes and Noble and more. Mrs. Beshear put it this way.

“Marshalling all those forces because of one man’s desire to make a difference. I think that's called the power of one," said the First Lady.

Davis brought more than books. He also brought a message to these little ones. Three letters – RMA - make sure you have the right mental attitude in whatever you do.

Although Davis has passed the halfway mark, you can still help him complete his mission. Books can be dropped off at the Sparrow Antique Mall in Shepherdsville or call Davis at 502-428-6029.
