LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Some of the men hoping to help fix the problem are hoping you will vote to send them to Washington. Six of the candidates vying for the Senate seat being vacated by Jim Bunning spoke to the Kentucky Association of Counties Thursday afternoon.

They showed up at the Galt House and the gloves came off early in this one. The two Democrats in the race badgered each other over their personal investments and “Cap and Trade.” It is a bill supported by President Obama that would most likely put a major crimp in Kentucky’s coal industry.

Lt. Governor Daniel Mongiardo claimed Attorney General Jack Conway put most all of his eggs in the basket of an energy company that opposes coal.

"91 percent of his entire wealth is in one company that is in 180 degree opposition to the interest of the people of the state of Kentucky,” said Mongiardo.

"He himself is invested in a natural gas that has no coal, that advocates against coal, so if Daniel wants to give me investment advice, if he wants to play Chuck Schwab, come out here. As long as he doesn't charge me any fees, I'm ok with it. I'll talk to him about my own investment decisions," Conway said.

As for the Republicans, the hot topic turned out to be Guantanamo Bay and if 9-11 terror suspects should be tried by the military or in a civilian court.

"A press release went out today says I'm for bringing the prisoners back from Gitmo and trying them in New York just like Obama,” said candidate Rand Paul. “I apparently have become an acolyte of Obama even though I didn't know it. But Guess what? I'm not for bringing the prisoners up here. I think they should be tried under military tribunal at Gitmo."

"The most important thing about Guantanamo Bay is not what said what or who believes what, it's the issue itself,” said Trey Grayson, Kentucky Secretary of State. “What are we going to do to keep America safe and keeping Guantanamo Bay open, not having that trial in New York, having military tribunals, that's the ... we're going to keep Americans, we're going to keep Kentuckians safer by doing that.”

With about a year to go, we are going to hear a lot more of this in Kentucky in the battle for a U.S. Senate seat.
