LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Unemployment remains high with the holidays right around the corner. But while many are struggling, others are giving to those less fortunate.

Dozens of kids at Sacred Heart became angels themselves just in time for Thanksgiving.

"Just makes me feel warm inside just because like when I help people it makes me feel good," said Maxwell Stengel, a second grader.

Students Pre-K through 8th grade, who led by a team of second graders, celebrated their collection of nearly 7,000 canned goods - four times as many as last year.

"Sometimes they don't get food on Thanksgiving so we're giving them all these cans so they can eat on Thanksgiving," said Justin Durik, another second grade student.

All the food will go to Kentucky Harvest.

"This is the future of America helping children who are the future of America," said Stan Curtis of Kentucky Harvest.

Simultaneously across town, hundreds of those in need lined up at Churchill Downs for the Lord's Kitchen turkey giveaway. We met a woman who is on disability. Christine Goodwin was in the same line last year and has one thing to say to those who donated.

"They come from the heart and God bless them for doing that," said Goodwin.

Volunteers passed out more than 500 turkeys and 3,200 pounds of food donated by employees and workers associated with Churchill Downs.

"This year, we proclaimed this week to be Love Your Neighbor week," said Rev. Larry D. Coleman of the Lord's Kitchen. "And every person who comes through the line we're telling them how to love one another with expression of giving thanks."

During another huge turkey giveaway from the Calvary Episcopal Church on South Fourth Street, hundreds of turkeys were given away Monday with nearly 500 more going to needy families on Tuesday. One woman drove from Fort Knox to donate 13 birds and another man brought in 25.
