LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A portion of the Shawnee Expressway has been renamed in honor of former state senator Georgia Davis Powers. The 86-year-old was the first African American woman elected to the Kentucky Senate.
Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear, and many other guests, were on hand at the unveiling of the new signs on June 16. The name change is designated for the 7.5 mile stretch of Interstate 264 in west Louisville.
"Senator Powers did not merely live through the civil rights movement, she lived it. She didn't simply wish for change, she created it. She didn't just witness history, she made it," said Gov. Beshear.
Powers served for 21 years in the Senate championing civil rights.
