LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - An 11-year-old boy hit by a car late Saturday died from his injuries. The Jefferson County Coroner's office has confirmed that Dylan Geitgey died Sunday afternoon.
An autopsy was scheduled for Monday morning.
A spokesperson for Metro Police said alcohol is "definitely a factor" in the crash that left Geitgey hospitalized with life-threatening injuries Saturday. It happened at 8:03 p.m. at 4303 Shenandoah Drive in the City of Fincastle.
Witness Cleola Mills described the Ford Escort that passed her home ahead of the accident.
"The car was going through here faster than 25 mph...the speed limit," Mills said." Like she was on the Gene Snyder...she wasn't driving like in a subdivision."
Mills recalled hearing a loud "boom" seconds later. Around the corner, witnesses described seeing a young boy injured on the ground with a bicycle nearby. Police Spokesperson Dwight Mitchell first told WAVE 3 the driver of the Ford Escort left the roadway, struck Geitgey and crashed into the garage of a nearby home.
On Sunday Mitchell said he spoke with the sergeant who handled the case and said the boy was in the middle of the street when he was hit.
We spoke with the homeowner, whose garage, truck and car were damaged in the crash. She described seeing a beer bottle with a straw tucked outside behind the driver's side wheel of the Ford Escort involved.
Mitchell says it's clear alcohol is involved in the crash but it is unclear "to what extent" the substance played a role. Mitchell says charges are pending for the driver, who was taken to Baptist East Hospital with non-life threatening injuries Saturday night.
The condition of a passenger in that vehicle is unknown.
One of Dylan's teachers told attended Chancey Elementary School last year and she described him as a "great kid" and a member of the basketball team. She says though he was small in size, he was the "heart and soul" of the team, and that when he played you "couldn't help but cheer for him."
On Sunday neighborhood friends posted signs on the front door of the family's home.
"We will pray for you to make your pain go away. We love Dylan," 10-year-old Zariah Taylor said of the sign made for her best friend's family. "We hope these signs and cards and posters will take the pain away. We love the family and Dylan. May he rest in peace."
Nine-year-old Jenna Smith recalled climbing a tree with Dylan in her family's front yard.
Twelve-year-old Wynter Holsey says it is important to show Dylan's family the community is behind them. She says she was upset and cried, and wanted to be alone when she first learned about the Saturday accident.
"I just wanted to show support and that I really care," Wynter said of the signs she made for Geitgey family. "I want them to be happy and show them people care."
A candlelight service was scheduled for Monday night at 8:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Chancey Elementary School. Organizers say the event is open to the public and a way to show support for the Geitgey family during this difficult time.
Chancey Elementary School is located at 4301 Murphy Lane in Louisville.
