BARDSTOWN, KY (WAVE) - A former Louisville Metro police officer who shot and killed a man is back on the job in central Kentucky.

During an undercover drug deal in 2004, Mckenzie Mattingly shot 19-year-old Michael Newby in the back. Mattingly was fired from the Louisville Metro Police department, but during his trial was acquitted of murder and wanton endangerment.

Now, six years later, WAVE 3 News has learned that Mattingly is a City of Bardstown police officer. Mattingly started his new job on August 9 and is working as a patrolman.

According to Bardstown city officials, Mattingly started his career in the Nelson County city and tell us they are glad to have him back on the streets.

We tried to get in touch with the Newby family. Through a spokesman, they tell us the news has brought a mixed bag of emotions. They feel that time has taught them they have no power over Mattingly's employment, but are pleased that LMPD Chief Robert White didn't hire him back.

A possible meeting between the Newby and the Mattingly is in the works.
