By Dina Kaplan
(LOUISVILLE, December 11th, 2003, 7 p.m.) -- Two Louisville karate school instructors have been arrested and charged with multiple counts of rape and sodomy. The alleged victims in the rape case are two 13-year-old girls who were students at the school. And one of the victims tells us her teachers Preyed on other students as well. WAVE 3's Dina Kaplan reports.
The suspects Richard Woodard and his girlfriend, Lori Franklin, who works full-time in downtown Louisville. Police showed up outside her workplace Thursday afternoon and arrested them both.
After the two were arrested, we spoke with one of their alleged victims, who describes a karate school run like a cult. She says she and other 13-year-old girls were selected as so-called "first daughters" of the school, and then raped.
The teen has these words for two people who allegedly abused her: "I hope you pay for what you did. I hope you burn in hell for what you did."
The alleged victim had taken classes at "Richard's Karate Academy" since she was eight. She says she wanted to be "like Bruce Lee, I wanted to be a female Bruce Lee."
She has a living room full of trophies, and a devastating story of abuse. She says Woodard and Franklin taught the students about karate ... and about the benefits of what they called an "African marriage."
Reportedly, the two showed the victims books that said it was OK for girls as young as 12 or 13 to enter into an African marriage. Then, when she when she turned 13, the victim says things at the karate school turned ugly.
In the summer of 2002, she says Woodard and Franklin invited her to their house ... and then to their bedroom. "They just started touching on me..."
On Wednesday, Richard Woodard was indicted on six counts of rape and seven counts of sodomy. Lori Franklin was indicted for four counts of rape and four counts of sodomy.
Police say there were two victims, both 13-year-old girls.
The victim we spoke with says both Woodard and Franklin abused her, and that Franklin bought the contraception. The young woman says she kept the alleged abuse private for more than a year before finally confiding in her family and then going to police just before Thanksgiving.
