Internet Fraud Suspect Caught In Clarksville

(Mobile, Ala., February 20th, 2004, 10:05 a.m.) -- A fugitive from Internet fraud charges in Alabama now faces more serious allegations after running from police on a shoplifting charge in Clarksville, Indiana.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Andy Sellers says 30-year-old Scott Winingear remains jailed on charges stemming from the chase Wednesday with Clarksville police during which he reportedly brandished a knife and attacked an officer with a fire extinguisher.

He is expected to stand trial in Indiana before being sent back to Mobile, Alabama.

A federal grand jury in Mobile indicted Winingear last month on 19 counts of mail fraud, accusing him of bilking at least 19 people out of about 20-thousand dollars in an Internet auction.

He's accused of accepting payments for laptop computers that he never delivered.
