Murder Charges Filed Against Driver In Fatal DUI Crash

By David McArthur

(CHARLESTOWN, Ind., January 21st, 2005, 4:30) -- A southern Indiana man whose daughter was killed in a car crash earlier this week hopes the man who was driving is punished for her death. Police say 29-year-old Michael Prescott was driving drunk when he crashed his car, killing his passenger, a mother of three. WAVE 3's David McArthur reports.

It was early on the morning of January 17th when police say 29-year-old Michael Prescott was under the influence of alcohol when he crashed his car off Rockford Lane in Shively. Prescott's girlfriend, 25-year-old Serena Ireland, was thrown from the car, causing fatal injuries.

Serena's stepfather remembers her as a dedicated mom and a pleasant person to be around. "There wasn't much she didn't like," Eversole said. "She was easy going, got along with everybody. Her main thing was her kids."

Now Eversole is caring for Ireland's three children, and preserving memories has become more especially important -- in the aftermath of his stepdaughter's death, Eversole could only find an eighth grade photo of Serena.

Prescott is in custody charged with murder, DUI, and reckless driving, and Eversole thinks those charges are appropriate. "Murder, yeah. Everything he's going to get that boy deserves."

Eversole wants Prescott to reflect from prison about a decision that cost him a daughter, and three kids a mom.
