Woman Arrested For Trying To Sell Children To Undercover Officer

By Jeff Tang

(LONDON, Ky.) -- A 19-year-old woman from Laurel County is accused of trying to sell her children -- a 4-week-old and 2-year-old. WAVE 3's Jeff Tang investigates.

"I think it was a matter of money," said Sgt. Brad Mitchell with the Laurel County Sheriff's Department.

For Amanda Jones Marksberry, police say matters of money -- and ultimately drugs -- might have mattered more than her own children.

"She wanted $8,000 for the infant child," Mitchell said, "and she said that she had -- I think the other one was 2 years old -- and she would take $9,000 for both of them."

After a month-long investigation the Laurel County Sheriff's Department arrested Marksberry when they say she offered to sell both children to an undercover officer.

"We don't want to disclose what amount the money was, but we made a down payment to the mother for the children," Mitchell said.

Police say both kids are now safe with relatives, who police say knew nothing about Marksberry's plan to sell her children.

"She's the only one that knew she was wanting to do this," Mitchell said. "We don't think there was any other family members involved. They probably didn't even know about it."

Marksberry has already been arraigned on charges of cocaine trafficking, and any charges related to her children will be brought before a Laurel County Grand Jury in the coming days. She's currently being held in lieu of a $20,000 bond.
