LOUISVILLE (WAVE) - University of Louisville wide receiver Trent Guy continues to recover after he was shot early Saturday outside a bar at Theatre Square. As police search for the two shooters, many members of the community are quick to defend the player's honor.
"My heart dropped because he has so much going for him," said former University of Louisville linebacker Michael Brown.
When Brown heard a Cardinal player had been shot, the last name he expected to hear was Trent Guy.
"It's just sad," Brown said. "One incident, wrong place, wrong time one night."
Guy and his fiancé' Kia Hampton were trying to get out of Club Villa Fontana after someone allegedly touched Hampton inappropriately. Police say the two were then followed to a nearby parking garage where multiple rounds were fired on the couple by two suspects. Guy was hit in the back.
Brown says the club has had that kind of trouble before. He says sometimes guys with chips on their shoulder are there looking for a fight with someone like Trent Guy.
"They don't have much going on for them," says Brown. "These guys that have a lot going on for them have scholarships and bright futures and some guys are very envious of that, some guys are very envious of the women that like to be around these men."
Brown, who has played professionally for teams like Tampa Bay, says he saw a lot of talent in Guy and got to know him working out at the football complex. He says while most fans cheered the wide receiver for returning a kickoff for a touchdown, they don't know about all the good things he does off the field.
"He keeps himself active in church while he's in town and he does community work and charity work," Brown said.
Louisville attorney Matt Williams worked with the player on a local Habitat for Humanity house and says Guy is a polite, hard working volunteer with tremendous heart.
"He's the last person I would think would go out and find this kind of trouble and it's sad it found him," Williams said.
Monday, Cardinal coach Steve Kragthorpe said he has visited Guy in the hospital and so have a lot of other people because he's such a popular player. The coach reports Guy is doing well and has been up on his feet.
Kragthorpe says he is planning to put some new rules into effect concerning bars and earlier curfews for the players.
