LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The Kentucky Humane Society is taking an edgy way to get their point across. They want more people to spay and neuter their animals and are using sex in their advertising. The Humane Society got some complaints about the controversial ads in the past. You may have seen the posters that say, "Because I simply refuse to wear a condom," but they say the advertising worked. As WAVE 3's Maira Ansari reports, they are coming up with even racier way to help control the pet population.
Melissa Jackman says her customers just don't come to Hooters for the wings.
"It's the obvious" said Jackman. "When guys come in here they pay attention to what we have to say. Any promotion we have I always tell my customers about it."
There is a new one coming up with a very different type of operation.
"Grabs people attention and gets it on their brain," said Michelle Ray with the Kentucky Humane Society.
It's the new campaign ad called "Hooters for Neuters" by the Kentucky Humane Society.
"We've had some mixed response, but as long as we get people talking that's all that matters," said Ray
And who better to get the point across than Jackman and her friends.
"A lot of our clientele are men," said Jackman.
This time around, the Humane Society is targeting men.
"Certain men believe that that if you neuter your dog it will take away their masculinity and cringe at the thought of neutering," said Ray.
To Jackman, this actually means more than just another promotion at work.
"I am gonna have my dog done," said Jackman. "In my neighborhood there are so many strays. And you feel bad and they are starving and you can't take in every stray you see."
"We don't wanna have to choose to euthanize healthy adoptable pets so that is why everyone should spay and neuter," said Ray.
The benefits of spaying and neutering extend beyond combating the area's pet overpopulation crisis. An altered pet leads a longer, healthier life, with reduced risks for contracting certain diseases and developing cancer. In fact, a neutered dog can live up to three years longer and is less likely to mark territory, vent sexual frustration and show signs of aggression. It may have some other benefits too!
"They may think, ‘God, they aren't just pretty girls. They are really into other things,'" said Jackman.
"Hooters for Neuters" will take place at the Okolona Hooters, 7701 Preston Highway. Pet owners are asked to drop off their dogs between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. on Friday, August 22, so their canine can be transported to the S.N.I.P. Clinic for surgery that day.
While at Hooters, participants will receive free coupons, a Hooters for Neuters t-shirt and have the opportunity to win pet-related Hooters items.
Clinic appointments must be scheduled in advance by calling (502) 636-FIX1.
