LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - How would you like to learn to cut $150 out of your budget each month or make a milkshake for 25 cents? How about feed your family for a week for less than $50. WAVE 3's Elizabeth Donatelli reports on how you can save money in this struggling economy.
"I'm a shopaholic, I'll confess," said shopper Evan Ferrell laughingly. "But I'm learning now that I can't spend like I used to."
"Food is going up mostly every day. Every time you look up, 5 cents, 10 cents," said Amado Samuel, another shopper.
There is no question that budgets are tight these days, but who would have thought that a hillbilly housewife could have the answers.
Shopper Laura Dwyer said, "I'm sure there's a lot of hillbilly housewives out there," but the one we are talking about is online.
Hillbillyhousewife.com shows you how to make a large pizza for less than $3.00, turn leftover rice into breakfast pancakes, feed a family of six for a week for just $45 and shows you ways to shop most efficiently.
The best bets for your budget recommends shopping at discount superstores with large grocery sections. Once you get there, you're going to want to buy in bulk.
"They can save on trips to the store, obviously on the gas," says Mark Lacefield of Save A Lot.
Who knew buying more could save in the long run. Take, for example, Save A Lot's Pick 5. You can get nine drumsticks, five pork ribs, two pounds of ground beef, five brats and 20 sausage biscuits for under $20. As for the veggies, deals are often in the cans.
"I think they are not buying as many TV dinners and that type of thing. They are doing more cooking," Lacefield says.
It's cooking, that if done right, could save a bundle.
