Accused Killer Pleads Not Guilty

(RINEYVILLE, Ky., July 1st, 2003, 12:05 p.m.) -- A Leitchfield man charged with murder in the death of a man whose body was found in a suitcase floating in Rough River Lake has entered a plea of not guilty in Breckinridge District Court.

Twenty-one-year-old Joshua Cottrell entered the plea this morning before District Judge Thomas Lively, who set July 8th as the date for a preliminary hearing.

Cottrell remains in the Breckinridge County Jail under a $500,000 full cash bond. Lively told Cottrell he would have a court-appointed attorney before his next appearance.

Cottrell was arrested June 27th in connection with the death of 36-year-old Richie Phillips of Rineyville, whose body was found two days earlier.

On the night of June 25th, two fishermen found a piece of luggage floating in Rough River Lake and when they unzipped it, they found Phillips' body.
