RADCLIFF, KY (WAVE) - A 24-year-old man is charged with murder after a Hardin County police chase ended with a crash that killed one man and injured five others, including the suspect.
It happened around 8:00 a.m. at the intersection of 31W and Joe Prather Highway Sunday June 6th. That's where Kentucky State Police say Brandon Lee Jessie ran the light and struck a vehicle driven by 36-year-old James Fentress. The impact knocked Fentress's vehicle into a passing minivan and injured the four people inside.
Fentress was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jessie's charges include four counts of assault 1st degree, fleeing and evading police, receiving stolen property over $10,000, disregarding a traffic control device and speeding.
State Police Trooper Bruce Reeves says the pursuit started Sunday after a Hardin County Sheriff's deputy clocked Jessie traveling 125 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone. Reeves says the chase stretched eight to nine miles on Joe Prather Highway, and that Jessie dodged tire deflation strips as he fled. The vehicle Jessie was driving had been stolen from a Bowling Green dealership, according to state police.
"They made contact with the dealership and found out who was supposed to be authorized to use it. They went to that residence and he thought it was still there until he looked out there and saw that it was gone," said Trooper Reeves of the stolen vehicle, a Mitsubishi Outlander.
The vehicle had been stolen from the parking lot of a Glasgow apartment complex, where a car salesman for the Bowling Green dealership lived. Police say items were also stolen from other vehicles at the same complex and found inside the stolen Outlander at the scene of Sunday's crash.
Jessie's prior record included drugs, theft, burglary and assault charges according to Reeves, and he had outstanding charges in Barren County at the time of Sunday's crash in Hardin County. Those charges involved possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, wanton endangerment and persistent felony offender.
Jessie had been out of jail since April 5, according to a supervisor at the Barren County Corrections Center. He also served time in December for parole violations, according to the same supervisor.
Jessie was listed in critical condition Monday morning at University Hospital but at last check, Hospital officials said they had no one listed by that name.
