(LEXINGTON, Ky., August 6th, 2003, 5:30 p.m.) -- Rex Martin, a Lexington man whose castle in far eastern Woodford County became an area landmark, died Tuesday in a nursing home. He was 72, and had suffered from Alzheimer's disease for several years.
Martin began building the castle, located on 60 acres at the intersection of U.S. 60 and Kentucky 1967, in 1969, but never completely finished the project.
Martin's former wife, Caroline Martin, said that after a trip to Europe, she and Martin decided to build a home with a big wall around it, similar to homes they had seen during their trip. The castle walls go 20 feet into the ground, said Martin's son, Rex Martin Jr.
Inside the walls of the castle are a house, a swimming pool and a tenant house, Caroline Martin said.
Rex Martin Jr. said the castle likely will be sold.
