LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A fire Monday morning at Louisville's Camden Brookside Apartments has left at least 18 residents without a home.
The fire was reported a little after 9 a.m. by residents at the complex on Copper Creek Drive just off of Whipps Mill Road. By the time firefighters arrived, one apartment building was nearly fully engulfed in flames.
"When we arrived on the scene we had heavy fire showing on the 1st and 2nd floors getting into the attic," said Major John Stich, a battalion chief with the Lyndon Fire Department. "The first people on the scene made a fast attack on the fire and got the people out of the building."
Twenty-four-year-old Ginny Hobbs had just sat down to read her Bible when she heard neighbors banging on doors downstairs. "I looked out the window and the blinds were partially closed and I couldn't see out 'cause there was smoke, it was white smoke at that time. Then I ran outside, grabbed a couple of things: my purse so I could have some keys, and my phone, and before I knew it the whole apartment was up in flames."
Hobbs is certain she and her husband lost everything in their apartment. They do have insurance, but she's concerned it won't be enough to replace everything.
A total of 12 units were affected by the fire, with eight suffering severe damage. There is no word yet on what caused the fire, but the Louisville Metro Arson Squad continues to investigate.
Three firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion and no residents were seriously injured.
