LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - One person is dead after a fiery, single vehicle accident Friday morning that has closed Preston Highway.
According to Louisville Metro Police, around 5:20 a.m., a 1999 Ford Explorer traveling northbound on Preston Highway at a high rate of speed struck a utility pole the Gene Snyder Freeway. The Explorer burst into flames after striking the pole. The driver, 42-year-old Timothy Webb of Okolona, was pronounced dead at the scene.
As of 12:30 p.m., Preston Highway remained closed to traffic at the Snyder as the LMPD traffic unit conducted their investigation into why the SUV struck the pole. Police believe speed was more of a factor than weather conditions. Witnesses have told LMPD that Webb's Explorer was going 20 to 30 miles per hour over the posted 35 MPH speed limit.
Metro Police could not provide an estimated time when Preston Highway will be reopened. Traffic was being diverted onto the Snyder Freeway.
