LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The Christmas season is a time for sharing and happy gatherings with friends and family but the economy has many families struggling to come up with just the basic needs this holiday season.
That's why the Salvation Army is kicking off its annual red kettle campaign earlier than usual.
Starting Nov. 2 bell ringers began locating throughout the metro area. Maj. Keath Biggers says the bells have special meaning for him.
"I like to say the bell rings for hope," Biggers said. "The bell rings so that someone will be there making sure that needs are met."
According to the Salvation Army, local donations are down due large in part to the state of the economy.
They're also seeking volunteers to help throughout the holiday season.
To volunteer, call 502-671-4920.
