LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Early Friday morning, Metro Police found the badly decomposed body of 89-year-old Sina Harris inside her home at 1710 Cypress Street after a 9-hour standoff with her 52-year-old son. The coroner’s office said Harris had been dead since May from natural causes.
Julius C. Harris is charged with abuse of a corpse and theft of more than $500. Police believe Julius Harris was cashing in on his mom's money the entire time she has been dead.
Rev. Bruce Shaw of Pleasant View Baptist Church said he knew both Sina and Julius Harris for a long time. Sina Harris was a long-time Sunday School teacher at Pleasant View Baptist and Rev. Shaw said the church community lost a quiet warrior.
The last time Rev. Shaw saw Sina Harris was Christmas 2008. Since then, Rev. Shaw said church members tried visiting Sina at her home, but always got an excuse from Julius.
"The story was always the same. She was visiting or she was sleep or I had awakened him," Rev. Shaw said.
Because Julius had taken care of his mother for seven years since she suffered a stroke, Rev. Shaw said the stories from Julius sounded logical and said he believed Julius when he said Sina was staying with relatives because he wanted a break.
"He's been faithful and loyal to his mother for the whole time she was sick," said Rev. Shaw.
Rev. Shaw said a funeral is planned for Sina Harris at Noon on Monday at A.D. Porter’s & Sons Funeral Home, 1300 W. Chestnut.
"She will definitely be missed in our church and even while she was out sick, she would make sure that her tithe in support got to the church," Rev. Shaw said.
