Soldier with KY ties witnessed Fort Hood shooting

Posted: Updated:

ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (AP) - A soldier with ties to central Kentucky says he was a witness to the shooting massacre at Fort Hood, Texas.

Staff Sgt. Kyle Puckett told The News-Enterprise of Elizabethtown that he was about to take a lunch break on Nov. 5 when he heard gunfire again and again.

Puckett says the accused shooter, Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, walked by his office, fired three rounds at the door and then kept running. Puckett says he called 911 and he and other soldiers helped the wounded after the shooting ended. The rampage at Fort Hood left 13 dead and 29 wounded. It was the worst mass shooting at a military post in the United States.

Puckett is a 12-year Army veteran who once lived in Hardin County, where his parents reside.
