Frank BarkerLOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - We're all watching our budgets these days and sometimes it's the little things that add up. Now there's word from The Courier-Journal that the price of the Thanksgiving day edition is increasing.
Frank Barker called our newsroom upset after receiving a notice that his November bill for the Courier-Journal would be going up $1.50 due to the oversized Thanksgiving issue. He's been a faithful reader and even worked at the paper for three decades stuffing ads - but he says this is just not right.
"I was just wondering if it was a mistake," Barker said. "I thought it was a mistake. I take a paper seven days a week and they never charged extra for a Thanksgiving Day paper before. Why are they doing it now?"
We asked Courier-Journal Publisher, Arnold Garson, for an explanation. He sent WAVE 3 this statement.
"The Courier-Journal raised the price of its Thanksgiving Day paper to the Sunday newspaper price level for some subscribers a year ago. We are simply extending that pricing this year. The reason is simple: the Thanksgiving Day newspaper actually is larger than the typical Sunday paper; it costs more to produce and distribute than any weekday newspaper.
Moreover, the consumer price of the newspaper continues to cover only a small fraction of the cost of producing the newspaper, and subscriber price increases for the newspaper generally have significantly lagged the reality for other consumer products in recent years. Single-copy prices for The Courier-Journal Thanksgiving Day edition have been at the Sunday pricing level for several years and will be unchanged this year."
Garson also told us that the price increase went into effect for some customers last year, and this year's increase means everyone will be paying the price of a typical Sunday edition.
