Officer Arrested For DUI While Driving Police Cruiser

(LOUISVILLE) -- A 13-year veteran of the Louisville Metro Police Department is facing drunk driving charges.

Police say Officer John Kelly was involved in a non-injury accident around 1 a.m. Thursday morning on Cane Run Road north of Millers Lane. Kelly was driving his cruiser but was not on duty.

When fellow officers arrived at the scene, they noticed Kelly had slurred speech and appeared unstable.

After failing field sobriety tests, Kelly was arrested but refused to take a breathalyzer. In the last five years, four other Louisville police officers have been arrested for DUI.

Louisville Metro Police spokesman says an internal investigation is under way. Kelly has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. He was released from jail on his own recognizance Thursday morning.
