(LOUISVILLE) -- A school bus and a car collided just before 8:30 a.m. Monday, sending 13 elementary students and two adults to local hospitals with minor injuries. WAVE 3's David McArthur reports.
As Major Charles Mucker, with Louisville Fire and Rescue explained, "There were various injuries, but they were more severe to the person driving the vehicle. The children were complaining of bumps and bruises."
The driver of the car was heading east on Iowa, just as the sun was coming up above the horizon. That driver told police he did not see the stop sign because of the sun and apparently did not see the bus, which did not have a stop sign and had the right-of-way.
"What we do know is there is a stop sign and the bus had the right of way," said police spokesman Dwight Mitchell. At least there is a failure to yield the right of way, if anything, at this stage."
"I heard a huge bang," said Betty Thomas, who lives nearby. She and other neighbors admit the morning sun can be harsh. "It's possible he couldn't see the stop sign, but you've got to careful."
The other 28 kids on board were transferred to another bus and continued on to school.
The adults in the car were taken to Jewish Hospital.
Police said they did not plan to file criminal charges in this case.
