19-year-old fatally shot during home invasion attempt

LOUISVILLE (WAVE) -- A 19-year-old man was shot in the head overnight in the Newburg neighborhood. It happened in the 4500 block of Caspian Drive about 2 a.m. The victim, 19-year-old Rocky Brown, died late Wednesday afternoon at University Hospital. Police say they don't have a description of the suspect but we do know that Brown did not live at the home where he was shot. WAVE 3's Maira Ansari reports.

Investigators tell us someone tried to break into the home, but couldn't because the door was barricaded.

The suspect fired a shot through the door, hitting Brown in the back of the head.

"The subject was shot through a door and apparently trying to make entry," said LMPD Detective Phil Russell. "The assailant was trying to break down the door. It appears the male subject who had been shot was trying to keep the door shut."

Jerry Tilford, who lives nearby, could plainly see the bullet hole in the door. "I'm 58 years old," he said. "When I was coming up, things like this just didn't happen."

Others who live in the neighborhood say they aren't surprised by the trouble on their streets.

"The whole street was full of cars and cops and people and I thought: 'oh my, what's going on now?'" said neighbor Charlotte Miles.

Police said there were several people inside the home -- including children -- when Brown was shot.  

Fortunately, no other injuries were reported.

"The children keep romping through my mind and I keep thinking that's too much for 'em," said Miles.
