LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Gas prices seem to climb every day and Tuesday is no exception. The state's tax on gas is going up and that means you will pay an extra one and a half cents per gallon. But a few lucky customers actually found it cheaper with a one time only deal - 99 cents a gallon. WAVE 3's Elizabeth Donatelli was at the Chevron on Baxter and Broadway and reports on why it was such a great deal.
They came early. All were there for gas marked down to 99 cents a gallon.
"Midnight because we figured there was going to be a lot of people here," said Jason Gray.
Gray says it was "totally worth it." He says it's a saving $50 and he would have to work 6 hours to make that much.
"I travel a lot," said Walter Tutt of Jeffersonville. "So by getting there gas at 99 cents a gallon, it's really going to help me out."
By the time the pumps were turned on just after 6 a.m., the line was stretching more than a mile down Broadway. Two hours later, cars were still sitting on Broadway.
One lady we talked to number 132 in line. She had been waiting since 4:45 a.m. In addition to their cars, some put extra fuel into jugs for later.
"It saved me between me and my wife's vehicle, over $100," said James Goley.
He said it was worth the 6 hour wait. In fact, Goley said he would have waited 8, 10 or 12 hours.
Everyone was taking advantage of this one-time deal for different reasons.
"I'm going to use it to job hunt this week," said Carl Quinn of Jeffersonville. "So I'm just going to take advantage of that."
The gas discount was sponsored by the Becker Law Offices just in time for the July 4th weekend.
"It seemed like oil companies go out of the way to gouge travelers on a day when we should celebrate our independence and especially today the state gas tax went into effect do I think the timing was perfect for doing this today," said Kevin Renfro of the Becker Law Office.
With a gallon of regular unleaded at $4.29 a gallon at that gas station, Tuesday's promotion saved drivers more than $12,000.
