Shooting, stabbing preceded crash that killed toddler

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A 3-year-old girl died at Kosair Hospital early Monday after the car she was riding in crashed late Sunday night. A set of bizarre events led up to the crash that injured three other people, including a 2-year-old girl.

LMPD Homicide Detective Lt. Barry Wilkerson says 21-year-old John Belden and Phillip Washington were arguing when Belden was stabbed and Washington was shot.

At that point, Wilkerson says Washington got into a car with two young girls and drove away, with Belden following on a motorcycle.

Both men were traveling north on Blue Lick Road when the car crashed around 11:30 p.m. at Blue Lick Road and Bellflower Drive.

A neighbor told us they heard yelling all day, and eventually several shots, before the fatal crash.

We spoke with another witness who said it looked like Belden was chasing the car. Police weren't sure if that was true.

"We're not sure if they were actually pursuing each other as such or if they were just following each other," Wilkerson said. "Apparently it appears as if they may have been going at a high rate of speed due to just looking at the accident scene right here."

An arrest slip indicates that Belden is facing three assault charges and violating an EPO.

The 2-year-old girl was being treated at Kosair Hospital. Her identity has not yet been released. Belden and Washington are at University Hospital.

Police are still gathering facts, and ask anyone with information to call the anonymous crime tipline at 574-LMPD (574-5673).
