LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Governor Steve Beshear along with Economic Development Cabinet officials joined Bardstown and Nelson County leaders on Wednesday to celebrate the grand opening of the Flowers Baking Co. of Bardstown. The ribbon cutting took place at the site of the new 197,000 square foot bakery located on thirty acres in the Nelson County Industrial Park off of Highway 150.

The company announced their plans to build in Bardstown in late 2007. The building was completed in February of this year with the first production line runs in May. The company already has about 100 employees on site including 45 Diversco associates. Flowers already has one plant in London, Kentucky. Flowers invested approximately $52 million dollars in the new bakery operation that makes break for brands such as Bunny Bread, Nature's Own and Whitewheat.

"I'm pleased to join Flowers Foods and the citizens of Nelson County to officially commemorate the opening of this new state-of-the-art bakery." said Governor Steve Beshear. "Flowers Foods is a fantastic company that I am confident will have years of success here in Bardstown."

Flowers currently operates 39 highly efficient bakeries that produce bread, buns, rolls, snack cakes and pastries, which are sold through an extensive direct-to-store-delivery network that encompasses the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Southwest. They also have markets in California and Nevada, and nationwide through other delivery systems.

Company officials say they plan to add a second production line in 2010 that will employ an additional 45 to 50 employees.
