FRANKFORT, KY (WAVE) - There is already one casualty of Monday's Senate committee vote that killed the video gaming bill. Ellis Park in Henderson, KY is closing for good.
Ellis Park owner Ron Geary told WAVE 3 that Senate president David Williams' opposition to expanded gambling was evident when House Bill 2 reached the end of the political road.
With the closure of the racetrack, 75 full-time employees and 400 seasonal workers will be out of a job at the end of the summer meet.
"Sad day for Ellis Park, sad day for Ellis team and sad day for Kentucky thoroughbred horse racing," said Geary. "This was our call for help."
Ellis Park will close September 8. The summer meet ends the day before on Labor Day.
