LEXINGTON, KY (WAVE) - Lexington police are investigating an early morning robbery that turned deadly. Police got into a shootout with the alleged female robber and she ended up dead. Now two officers are on modified duty while the incident is investigated.

Police tell us 30-year-old Lavonna Marie Dillon died at the UK Medical Center Thursday morning. Police say Dillion tried to rob a Shell station on Newton Pike around 3 this morning. The store clerk says Dillon held a gun on him as she made him exit the back door.

Officers say Dillon began shooting at them as soon as they arrived, and she was killed when they returned fire.

People staying at a nearby hotel heard the commotion but had no idea what was going on.

One hotel guest told us she thought it was fireworks, and another guest said there wasn't time to react. "We really didn't connect it with anything. We heard the pops and then immediately we heard sirens."

No one else was injured during the shootout. The officers involved - Lt. Raymond Roller and Officer Jared Jones - are now on modified duty.
