Dr. Marcello Pietrantoni, M.D., F.A.C. O.G., is a perinatologist-a physician specializing in maternal and fetal health. Perinatologists receive all the same training that a standard OB/GYN doctor would, but study for an additional three years to understand the many aspects of pregnancy complications.
Complications can occur for a number of reasons. Perhaps a mother has a pre-existing condition, like high blood pressure or diabetes that could threaten a pregnancy. Or, perhaps there is evidence that the developing fetus has conditions which require treatment while still in the uterus. As a perinatologist, Dr Pietrantoni can address these concerns, using the highest quality diagnostic tools such as 3D Ultrasound, amniocentesis, and more. He is also qualified to deliver medications and treatments directly to the fetus. He coordinates the delivery of babies in a high-risk pregnancy, such as a multiple birth, for instance, or when the mother has a medical condition, which will complicate the delivery. And he can work with genetic counselors to help a patient with a strong family history of genetic diseases determine if any future or existing pregnancies will be affected.
Dr. Pietrantoni received his obstetric and gynecology training at the University of Buffalo in New York, and completed his studies and residency in perinatology at the University of South Florida. Dr. Pietrantoni is certified by ACOG, which is the American Academy of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is a member of American Medical Association, Greater Louisville Medical society Kentucky Medical Society, Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine, Louisville Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He has been a practicing perinatologist for more than 17 years.
