LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – One person is dead after a single vehicle accident on the Gene Snyder Freeway near Westport Road.
According to Louisville Metro Police spokesperson Dwight Mitchell, the crash happened around 8 a.m. Tuesday in the southbound lanes. Mitchell said witnesses have told police that a Ford Explorer was trying to change lanes when the driver overcorrected and the vehicle flipped several times. Speed is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
Three people were in the vehicle. One passenger, 24-year-old Lazaro Mendoca-Angulo of Lousiville, was ejected from the Explorer and died at the scene. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office said that Mendoca-Angulo was not wearing a seatbelt and died from multiple traumatic injuries.
The two others in the SUV were taken to University Hospital for treatment. Mitchell tells WAVE 3 the injuries to the second passenger are considered life-threatening. Their names have not been released.
The southbound lanes of the Snyder where closed by crash, but reopened shortly after 10 a.m.
