Louisville wins Battle of the Bluegrass 1-0

The No. 7/7 Louisville men's soccer team defeated Kentucky 1-0 in the Battle of the Bluegrass on Wednesday night in Cardinal Park. The Cards improve to 9-1-2 overall, tying their best start in school history.

Kentucky came out with a lot of energy in the first kick challenging the Cardinal defense early. Cardinal keeper Andre Boudreaux came up with a big save in the 13th minute of play after a shot from Marcos dos Santos. A minute and a half later, Dos Santos challenged Boudreaux again.

The Cardinals' energy intensified late in the first period. Kenney Walker bent a free kick to the right post and Phil Edginton jumped up for the header to score in the 37th minute of play. Louisville closed out the first period with a 2-1 Corner Kick advantage, while Kentucky held a 6-3 shot advantage. Boudreaux finished the first period with two saves while UK's Dan Williams finished with one.

Louisville took control early in the second half, and the Cardinal defense was outstanding in the second half. Edginton blocked a shot in the box in the 47th minute to foil a UK chance. Gerardo Chavez made a save inside the box in the 52nd minute. Three minutes later Boudreaux came out of the goal mouth and Walker made a huge save to preserve the shutout.

Louisville outshot Kentucky 7-4 in the second period and held a 4-2 corner kick advantage. Williams finished the game with five saves while Louisville finished with four saves.
