LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A shooting late Thursday afternoon near Lake Dreamland left two people dead. The double murder happened while dozens of people were milling around. It has rocked a usually calm neighborhood and left police searching for clues.

Neighbors in the Whispering Woods apartment complex off Cane Run Road say their neighborhood is usually peaceful.  All that changed quickly Thursday afternoon.

According to Alicia Smiley, a LMPD spokesperson, officers responded to a call of gunshots at the complex just after 5 p.m. When they arrived at the 4100 block of Tipsy Circle, officers found two bodies.

"An unidentified black male as well as an unidentified black female both were located outside the apartment building deceased," Smiley said. "At this time we're not sure about the relationship between the two victims, nor do we have a guesstimate what their ages are."

Residents in the complex said the victims were mother and son, and that the shooting was the result of a fight that happened earlier. As of Thursday night, police weren't confirming any details.

"As of right now, we don't have any motive. I anticipate we'll probably be working well into the early morning hours," said Smiley, who added the size of the crime scene and number of witnesses and residents at home during the time of the shooting would contribute to a lengthy investigation. She estimated that detective would be speaking with 20 to 30 people before the evening was done.

"Fortunately the one thing it does, it gives us a great number of eyes as well as a great pair of ears looking and hearing different things," Smiley said. "Whereas one person may tell you A, someone else may be able to put together B, by the time it's over you've got all your pieces together."

Police are asking anyone with any information related to the case to contact the LMPD Crime Tip Line at (502) 574-LMPD. All calls to the Crime Tip Line are anonymous.
