Suspect sought in debit card theft

By Brian Bernardi

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Police are looking for a suspect posing as someone else to use a stolen debit card, and they're asking for your help to catch him.

"The suspect approached the victim at about 2 o'clock in the morning at the corner of 4th and Liberty and engaged the victim in conversation," said LMPD Detective Bill Keeling. "During that conversation, he demanded money and produced a sharp edged object."

At one point, Keeling says "the suspect forced the victim to a nearby ATM machine at a local hotel and forced him to withdraw money, at which point the suspect fled."

The suspect kept the victim's debit card, and later used it again, even signing the victim's name when making purchases. The suspect used the stolen card at two locations, getting in and out of white Ford Neon someone else was driving.

"The suspect visited two businesses - a fast food restaurant and a convenience store - where he made purchases at both," Keeling said.

If you recognize the man shown in the surveillance photos, you're asked to call the anonymous crime tipline at 574-LMPD (574-5673).

For the past few years, officer involved shootings have led to unprecedented protests. Backlash and violence at times have been so severe, some police said it made them hesitate or even avoid some actions on the job. It's called the Ferguson effect - a reference to the Missouri town where an officer shot Michael Brown in 2014.
