Proposed budget cuts for Indiana school systems

A. HARRISON COUNTY:

1. North Harrison Community Schools - needs to cut less than $600,000.

-Won't replace teachers that are retiring/resigning

-Newly hired non-certified staff not getting insurance benefits

-Last summer saved money by cutting down on maintenance

2. Lanesville Community School Corp. School District - needs to reduce almost $1 million in spending

-According to Interim Superintendent Mr. Sam Gardener said they do not have specifics.

-According to Gardener it involves reducing people and programs. They would do attrition first.

B. JEFFERSON COUNTY:

1. Southwestern-Jefferson County Comm. - needs to cut about $500,000

-Won't replace teachers that retire

-Offered incentives for teachers to retire about $7,000 for the next 5 years

-Cuts custodial staff making them 9 months instead

C. SCOTT COUNTY:

1. Scott County School District 1 - needs to cut about $500,000

-Looking at their cash reserve and rainy day fund

-Saved money by cutting down on maintenance

-Not replacing teachers that retire

-Reviewing summer school programs

-Reviewing travel made by staff

2. Scott County School District 2 - needs to cut about $800,000

-About 65 cost cutting options

-Not replacing teachers or other staff that retire

-Reduced overtime

-Reduction in force by attrition first

D. JACKSON COUNTY:

1. Seymour Comm. Schools - needs to cut about $1.27 million with next years increment

-Officered retirement incentives

-Reduced professional development and instructional supplies

-Not replacing teachers that retire

-Trimmed extracurricular positions for next year

-Reducing summer school offerings

E. CRAWFORD COUNTY:

1. Crawford Co. Community School Corp. -

-Cuts will be discussed on the boards 3/16/10 meeting

-Offering early retirement incentives

-Transfers

F. ORANGE COUNTY:

1. Lost River Career Cooperative - ***According to David Embee, Director of Career Technical Education, the school does not have a taxing authority. The school is linked with Washington, Springs Valley & Paoli, meaning when they have funding problems, so do they. They could cut programs and are waiting on enrollment numbers for next year to determine what happens next.

2. Springs Valley Comm. School Corp. -

-Do not anticipate layoffs this year

3. Paoli Community School Corp. - needs to cut about $578,500

-Not replacing one teacher that is not retiring

-Looking to eliminate in school suspension at Paoli Jr./Sr. High School

-Reducing expenditures for purchases & improving grounds in the amount of about $500,000

-Plan to combine programs

G. WASHINGTON COUNTY:

1. East Washington School Corp. -

-Some reduction staff

-Looking at early retirement buyout

2. West Washington School Corporation -

-Some personnel cuts

-Offered incentives for retirements
