Son of former transportation secretary indicted

LONDON, KY (AP) - The son of a former state transportation secretary who is also a former police officer has been indicted on drug-related charges.

U.S. Attorney Edwin Walbourn III said in a news release Thursday that former Williamsburg police officer Kenneth Nighbert was one of two Williamsburg men indicted last week on charges of burglary to steal controlled substances.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports Nighbert is the son of Bill Nighbert, a former state transportation secretary acquitted in January of charges he participated in a bid-rigging scheme while in office.

Thirty-two-year-old Bill Nighbert and 30-year-old Larry Harville were indicted on charges they burglarized a Whitley County pharmacy in 2006 and stole $500 worth of prescription drugs. The release says Kenneth Nighbert was a police officer at the time.
