LOUISVILLE, KY (AP) - Organizers have canceled the U.S Bank Great American Balloon Race, a traditional event held before the Kentucky Derby.
The event was supposed to start Saturday morning but was delayed and then later canceled due to rain and bad weather. Festival organizers said in a news release they re-evaluated the weather around noon but unfavorable weather were predicted for Saturday evening.
This is the sixth time in the event's 38 year history that the race has been canceled.
The event began in 1973 with eleven balloons flying in the inaugural launch from Iroquois Park.
