CPSC announces 2 big crib recalls

WASHINGTON (AP) - The government is recalling thousands of Simplicity and Graco cribs, warning that babies could suffocate or strangle in them.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the Simplicity recall is linked to at least one death and involves thousands of cribs, possibly hundreds of thousands, though many had previously been recalled for other defects.

CPSC officials say the crib's tubular metal mattress-support frame can bend or detach and cause part of the mattress to collapse, creating a space into which an infant or toddler can roll and become wedged, entrapped or fall out of the crib.

Here's a list of cribs and model numbers involved:

Crib NameModel Number
Aspen 4-in-1 8755
Chelsea Deluxe 4-in-1 Convertible Sleep System 8324
Graco 4-in-1 Ultra Sleep System 4600
Graco Aspen 3-in-1 8740
Simplicity Crib and Changer Combo 8994
Simplicity Ellis Deluxe 4-in-1 Convertible Sleep System 8676
Simplicity Nursery-in-a-Box Convertible Crib 8910

The agency says about 217,000 Graco dropside cribs made by LaJobi are also being recalled.

The problem with both types of cribs stems from hardware failures in which a piece of the crib collapses or breaks - creating a dangerous gap between the mattress and crib where a baby can suffocate or strangle.
